Watch the video and pay attention to the following examples.  When you finish take the quiz.

1st person is when the narrator is a character in the story.  We know it is 1st person because they will use pronouns such as: me, we and I.  They see everything through the character's eyes.

Example:  "I guess it was an accident.  I don't suppose they woke up that morning and said to one another, 'let's go burn down Fred Shoemaker's toolhouse' . . .  but maybe they did." from The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

2nd person the narrator addresses the reader directly as you.   You will see pronouns such as: you, your, yourself, and yourselves.

Example:  "You are not the kind of guy who would be at a place like this at this time of the morning. But here you are, and you cannot say that the terrain is entirely unfamiliar, although the details are fuzzy."    Bright Lights, Big City

/3rd person the narrator is someone outside and describes the characters and action.  The pronouns are he

Example:  "Sam Vimes sighed when he heard the scream, but he finished shaving before he did anything about it."      Night Watch

3rd person  limited is when the narrator describes events as only one character perceives them.

Example:  The Dursleys hadn’t even remembered that today happened to be Harry’s twelfth birthday. Of course, his hopes hadn’t been high; they’d never given him a real present, let alone a cake – but to ignore it completely…

J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (1998), p. 9.

3rd person omniscient the narrator knows everything about the characters and events and may reveal details that the characters themselves could not reveal.

Example: Mrs. Thompson watched Pedro walk away from the schoolyard
alone. There was a small voice inside her that told her to stop
him. “He’s just a little boy. He’s far too small to walk home
alone,” she thought.
Pedro walked by the white picket fence that he
walked by every day on his way to and from
school. He stopped at the next street. “Which
way do I turn?” he thought to himself. He stood
there and looked up and down the street trying to
remember if he needed to turn left or right. He
turned right and looked desperately for
something that looked familiar to him. Nothing
did. He started to panic, “Where am I? Should I
turn around and go back? I wish my sister was
with me!”

Subjective point of view, the narrator reveals thoughts and feelings.

Example:  Andy said, "My foot hurts a lot."

Objective point of view a narrator does not refer to thoughts and feelings, but only describes what can be heard or seen.

Example:  Andy walks in with a cane and a knife in his foot.
